http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.anbehav.2014.12.017 0003-3472/© 2014 The Association for the Study of A Parthenogenesis is an asexual mode of reproduction that is rare in nature compared to sex. Parthenogenetic animals are derived from sexual progenitors, but little is known about how transitions to parthenogenesis evolve and persist. One hypothesis is that selection promotes transitions to parthenogenesis when males are rare or when mating is impossible (the mate scarcity hypothesis). However, we hypothesized that selection might also favour sex-to-parthenogenesis transitions when sexual interactions are costly (the sexual conflict hypothesis). These hypotheses lead to contrasting predictions about the nature of maleefemale interactions and their effects on female fitness. To test these hypotheses, we conducted a series of life history and behavioural experiments on the facultatively parthenogenetic spiny leaf stick insect, Extatosoma tiaratum. As predicted by sexual conflict theory, we found that females appeared to neutralize the costs of sex by utilizing counterevolved resistance traits: male-paired females resisted matings by curling their abdomens and kicking their legs during copulation attempts, prereproductive virgin females produced an antiaphrodisiac that repelled males, and parthenogenetic females made themselves inconspicuous to males by altering their pheromonal signals. Although measures of offspring viability point to possible advantages of sexual reproduction, females that were experimentally switched from a parthenogenetic to a sexual reproductive mode suffered elevated mortality and egg production costs that were not observed in exclusively parthenogenetic or exclusively sexual females. Our results suggest that females can benefit by avoiding mating in at least some circumstances, therefore supporting the hypothesis that sexual conflict mediated by female resistance could contribute to the evolution of facultative parthenogenesis. © 2014 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour. Facultative parthenogenesis in the Ryukyu drywood termite Neotermes koshunensis

Parthenogenesis is a relatively rare reproductive mode in nature compared to sex. In social insects, the evolution of parthenogenesis has a notable impact on their life histories. Some termites with parthenogenetic ability produce numerous non-dispersing supplementary queens asexually, whereas other castes are produced via sexual reproduction. This asexual queen succession (AQS) system is adapt...

Sexual conflict and the evolution of asexuality at low population densities.

Theories for the evolution of sex rarely include facultatively sexual reproduction. Sexual harassment by males is an underappreciated factor: it should at first sight increase the relative advantage of asexual reproduction by increasing the cost of sex. However, if the same females can perform either sexual or asexual life cycles, then females trying to reproduce asexually may not escape harass...

The fitness effects of delayed switching to sex in a facultatively asexual insect

Facultative reproductive strategies that incorporate both sexual and parthenogenetic reproduction should be optimal, yet are rarely observed in animals. Resolving this paradox requires an understanding of the economics of facultative asexuality. Recent work suggests that switching from parthenogenesis to sex can be costly and that females can resist mating to avoid switching. However, it remain...

The Persistence of Facultative Parthenogenesis in Drosophila albomicans

Parthenogenesis has evolved independently in more than 10 Drosophila species. Most cases are tychoparthenogenesis, which is occasional or accidental parthenogenesis in normally bisexual species with a low hatching rate of eggs produced by virgin females; this form is presumed to be an early stage of parthenogenesis. To address how parthenogenesis and sexual reproduction coexist in Drosophila po...

Multiple direct transitions from sexual reproduction to apomictic parthenogenesis in Timema stick insects.

Transitions from sexual reproduction to parthenogenesis may occur along multiple evolutionary pathways and involve various cytological mechanisms to produce diploid eggs. Here, we investigate routes to parthenogenesis in Timema stick insects, a genus comprising five obligate parthenogens. By combining information from microsatellites and karyotypes with a previously published mitochondrial phyl...
